Extremely Special Omer

Dear California North Omers,
Our California North Odyssey of the Mind family is heartbroken by the news of Janis Dewar’s passing. She had just completed a difficult course of chemotherapy and was optimistic about moving through follow-up radiation treatments. On Friday she was already mapping out her Odyssey of the Mind year. Sadly, on Monday morning she unexpectedly passed out at home, and the emergency responders were unable to revive her.
As the long-time California State Board Member and Co-Director of SF Bay Odyssey she was the Princess who scurried around the SF Bay tournament making sure that everything was moving smoothly. As coaches we didn’t fully understand what that meant, but after joining the ranks of officials we figured it out. She was a true servant leader, steadfast advocate for Odyssey of the Mind, and a vital part of our extended Odyssey family. We will miss her and know it won’t be the same without her, but her inspiration will continue to thrive in us.
Our thoughts are with her husband and family.
Saundra Hodges
California North Association Director

  1. Janis and I met in the sixth grade and have been friends for over 56 years. I, too, am heartbroken. But I wanted to pass on how much she loved the Odyssey of the Mind organization. While I am not involved, she spoke about it constantly and was so proud each year of the teams. I know you will miss not only her incredible organizational skills but her sunny personality.
